LIVE WELL – Senior Strength Training @ CMH Senior Health Center

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an eight-week, evidence-based strength training program designed for older adults who want to improve their quality of life and stay active. As a part of the Polk County Health Center’s Live Well campaign, this event, sponsored by the Polk County MU Extension, will be held at the CMH Senior Health Center on Mondays and Fridays from January 15-March 9, 12:30-1:30 pm. Session 1 will repeat from March 12-May 14. Call 417-777-7171 to pre-register for this course, or your start date will be delayed. Weights will be provided. Here’s to a healthy 2018!

LIVE WELL – Chronic Disease Self-Management @ Bolivar United Methodist Church
Jan 18 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic medical conditions. The CDSMP is provided in 2.5 hour sessions once a week for six weeks at the Bolivar United Methodist Church. People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic diseases themselves. Subjects covered include:

1) Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain, and isolation
2) Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
3) Appropriate use of medications
4) Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals
5) Nutrition
6) How to evaluate new treatments

Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The program was developed by Stanford University and is funded by the Arthritis Foundation. Call the Polk County MU Extension to register at 417-326-4916.

In this course provided by the Polk County MU Extension and the No Kid Hungry program, you will learn how to prepare healthy, delicious meals and stretch your food dollars from trained nutrition professionals. Space is limited, so call to register at 417-326-4916 before it’s too late!

LIVE WELL – Small Steps to Health & Wealth @ Countryside Assembly
Jan 22 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

The Small Steps to Health and Wealth program motivates participants to improve both their health and their finances. Participants are encouraged to set a health goal and/or wealth goal, then take action to achieve their goals by identifying small progress steps. Participants discuss 20 similarities between health and personal finance issues and learn 10 suggested behavior change strategies that can be applied to either area of life. The impact of health on finances and finances on health is also explored. The program concludes with a discussion of seven key health and wealth success factors: attitude, automation, awareness/knowledge, control, environment, goals, and time.
